Still time to prep allocation!

My departure date is fast approaching, and I’m still working hard on my Korean before taking the allocation test. I’ll have to take this test just a few days before I leave to South Korea. Oh, how I’d love to avoid starting at level 1! In my Korean lessons, I’ve already covered greetings and introductions, dining out, and -of course- shopping🤭. I know I’ll still be a beginner, but I want to at least handle simple, everyday conversations —asking for the time, checking when an event is, finding a location, and actually understanding directions when I ask for them. Just the absolute basics, but still. My notebook keeps filling up with all the essentials…

I need to get through at least three more chapters before taking the pre-test, but life keeps moving. It won’t just pause for me.

What keeps me going? In just 3.5 weeks, I’ll be in Seoul, leaving Rotterdam behind for two months. Along with my notebook, I’m bringing my sketchbook and camera, hoping to capture a lot and share it here.

With an area of around 605 km2, Seoul is almost twice the size of Rotterdam. And with a population of approx. 9.4 million, it has about 14 times as many people. Geographically, Seoul is set in a mountainous and hilly region. The city is home to five UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Changdeokgung, Hwaseong Fortress, Jongmyo, Namhansanseong, and the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty. Alongside its historical sites, Seoul also boasts modern architectural landmarks such as N Seoul Tower, 63 Building, Lotte World Tower, Dongdaemun Design Plaza, and COEX. That’s it for this little preview.

A few months ago I found a great app to help me learn and practice Korean words and phrases: Wozzol. You can create word and phrase lists and practice them in different ways, pretty handy and efficient. So far, I really like this app. I also do a few Duolingo exercises every day, not because I’m competitive, but just to keep my streak going😁.

It’s also definitely important to practise writing in Hangul (the official writing system for the Korean language), as it helps reinforce what I learn and improves both grammar and vocabulary. Here I am practising the Days of the Week in Hangul.
